Kids are innately curious and are always looking for way to satiate there curiosity. So today we are sharing a cool and fun learning activity for kids that they can experiment with at home. And believe us; your kids are going to love it!!
We are sure that kids have asked you this question: Why do things glow in the dark? Here is an experiment that will help them answer this question, First things first what all do we need to do this experiment…that is very simple! All you need is 3 simple things: A black light, petroleum jelly and a piece of paper. The petroleum jelly is used as a kind of invisible ink. Dip your finger into the jelly, and then use your finger to write a message on the piece of paper. When you’re finished wipe off the remaining jelly from your finger. Have your black light ready. Turn off the room lights and turn on the black light. Can you see the message you wrote with your finger? Now the question is why is something that you couldn’t see in a lit room now visible in a dark room? First, let’s talk about the light. We call it a black light because they emit very little light that our eyes can see. Visible light contains a spectrum of colors ranging from red, through orange, yellow, green, and blue, to violet or purple (The Rainbow of colors VIBGYOR). Beyond violet light in the spectrum is ultraviolet light, which our eyes cannot see. Now let’s come back to the question. Why does petroleum jelly glow under the black light? Most of the time when we look at an object, we see light reflected from the surface of the object. But with a black light, there isn’t much visible light, so simple reflection of light doesn’t account for how bright the jelly glows. Petroleum jelly actually contains a substance called phosphorus. It absorbs radiation and emits it as visible light. So the phosphorus in the jelly absorbs the invisible ultraviolet radiation from the black light and emits visible light. Now, that your kid knows the secret ask him/her to make their hands glow. For this you will again need a black light, petroleum jelly and latex glove if you do not want your kid to make their hands messy. Put the latex glove on your kids’ hand scoop it into jelly jar. Rub the jelly well over the hand and then switch off the room lights and turn on the black light, hold it over your kids’ hand. Your kid will now see his hand glowing. Can you think of a way you could use this trick to have fun and play some pranks on your friends and family?
